How to Destroy America in Three Easy Steps is a 2020 nonfiction book by American conservative commentator Ben Shapiro. It was published by Broadside Books, an imprint of HarperCollins.[1][2]
The book argues that American political culture is divided between what Shapiro calls "unionists", who understand the United States as a shared project organized around founding ideals, and "disintegrationists", whom he accuses of attacking American history, philosophy, and culture. HarperCollins describes the book as a warning that national cohesion depends on recovering shared truths about American identity, history, and reality.[3]
The book followed Shapiro's The Right Side of History, published in 2019, and preceded The Authoritarian Moment, published in 2021.[4][5] Publishers Weekly sales-history data listed the book's initial rank at number two on its hardcover nonfiction list in August 2020 and recorded later hardcover nonfiction rankings in August and September 2020.[6]
Critical reception included disagreement over the book's framing of American political conflict. In Arc Digital, political theorist Matthew McManus criticized the book as broad and polemical, arguing that its account treated the political left as the central force behind American disunity.[7]
