Between 1993 and 2008, Long created and operated Nova Express Café, an outer-space and fantasy-themed café and art space in Los Angeles.[1] Much of the decor was fabricated from found objects and second-hand materials.[2] Long described his approach as integrating the direct experience of art with everyday life in order to make art more accessible.Template:Citation needed Each seating area was designed as a themed fantasy zone defined by sculptural art.[3] Many performances by poets, musicians and artists were free to the public.[4] The café, described as a "walk in sculpture that sells pizza",[5] attracted a following during its existence.[6]
